Welcome Fred
by John O"Herron
The Raymond Proffitt Foundation is pleased to introduce and welcome a new member, Frederick R. Duke, to the Board of Trustees. Fred resides in Bethlehem (Spring Valley), Pennsylvania where he conducts business, looks out upon the world, and sallies forth on the occasional fishing foray. Fred studied at the New York School of Visual Arts and presently maintains The Duke Group, a freelance photography, graphics, and consulting firm. Fred officially embarked on the path of in-the-trenches environmental, consumer, and political activism some twenty two years ago holding at various times volunteer and paid positions. Being the sum total of his experience, he brings to the board above average skills in verbal, visual, and written communications and a political astuteness seldom found outside of a public office plus a deep sentiment for environmental responsibility.
Though you may not know Fred, you surely are familiar with
some of the issues with which he has been involved. He was the Executive
Director of Delaware Un-Limited during the fight against PECO and intimately
involved with The International Acid Rain Caravan, The National Association of
Atomic Veterans, The National Clean Air Coalition, The Watershed Association of
the Delaware River, Delaware Riverkeeper Network, and Pennsylvania Chapter of
The Sierra Club. He was
instrumental in passage of national acid rain legislation, reauthorization of
the Clean Air Act, the 1983 Pennsylvania House Conservation Committee
Investigations under Dick Thornburg, the establishment of the PADER Regional
Committees and is credited with bringing the term, Atomic Veterans, into the
American lexicon.
Fred has worked with notably visible activists such as Lois Gibbs, Ralph Nader, Pete and Toshy Seager, and Abbie Hoffman and he is here to work with you, too.
